An Action Research on the 'Rebus Usage' Skills of Students in the Introduction to Visual Communication Design Course

Abstract

The introductory course in visual communication design is based on the elements, principles and rules of design. For this reason, in the course, first of all, it is necessary to give students the awareness of reading universal and cultural images/symbols while creating a design idea, and also to reflect on the design by using their creativity. The use of rebus plays an effective role in the development of creative thinking. Rebus is a language of expression with an entertaining function that has a puzzle feature in design for sounds or abstract words, regardless of the meanings of existing images/symbols. The aim of the research is to speed up the image/symbol creation process by using rebus production forms to contribute to the creativity of visual communication design students and to contribute to the development of their knowledge/skills. The action research model was used as a qualitative research method in the study. For the research, the necessary permission was obtained from the Ethics Committee of Istanbul Gedik University with the number of 09.05.2022 / E-56365223-050.01.04-2022.137548.82-347, and the findings were determined by descriptive analysis approach. In the research, it was concluded that the students who took the visual communication design introductory course transferred their thoughts to their designs with creative ideas by using rebus.

Abstract

Görsel iletişim tasarımına giriş dersi, tasarımın elemanları, ilke ve kurallarına dayanır. Bu nedenle derste öncelikle öğrencilere bir tasarım fikrini oluştururken evrensel ve kültürel imge/simgeleri okuma ayrıca yaratıcılıklarını kullanarak tasarıma yansıtma bilincini kazandırmak gerekir. Yaratıcı düşüncenin geliştirilmesinde ise rebus kullanım etkili bir rol üstlenir. Rebus, mevcut imge/simgelerin anlamlarından bağımsız olarak sesleri ya da soyut kelimeler için tasarımda bulmaca özelliği taşıyan, eğlendirici işleve sahip bir anlatım dilidir. Araştırmanın amacı, görsel iletişim tasarımı öğrencilerine yaratıcılıklarına katkı sağlamada rebus üretim biçimlerini kullanarak imge/simge oluşturma sürecini hızlandırmak ve bilgi/becerilerinin gelişimine katkıda bulunmaktır. Araştırmada nitel araştırma yöntemi olarak eylem araştırması modeli kullanılmıştır. Araştırma için, İstanbul Gedik Üniversitesi Etik Kurulundan 09.05.2022 tarih/ E-56365223-050.01.04-2022.137548.82-347 sayısıyla gerekli izin alınarak bulgular betimsel çözümleme yaklaşımıyla tespit edilmiştir. Araştırmada, görsel iletişim tasarımına giriş dersini alan öğrenciler rebus kullanımı ile yaratıcı fikirlerle düşüncelerini tasarımlarına aktardıkları sonucuna varılmıştır.
