First Completely Renewable Solar Energy Building Examples: Masdar City and Masdar Science and Technology Institute Campus

Abstract

The use of renewable energy sources is important to ensure the demand for energy, which is a universal problem. Accordingly, scientific research on clean and sustainable energy sources has gained momentum. The existence of energy sources alone is not enough. In addition, parameters such as the potential of these energy sources, their compatibility with the environment and climate, cost and continuity should be taken into account. In light of these parameters, it is important that energy sources are “renewable” and “sustainable”. It is observed that environmental and climate-sensitive architectural designs contribute positively to human life with developing technology. Sustainable architecture is a combination of aesthetic, environmental, social, political and ethical values. Another important feature of these structures is that they are fed with renewable energy sources, and they effectively use the energy available, especially where they are located. In this study, Masdar City in Abu Dhabi and Masdar Institute of Science and Technology Campus in the city were examined as a research area in the context of sustainable architectural principles and holistic evaluation of passive building design systems applied in buildings aimed at increasing energy performance.

Abstract

Evrensel bir problem olarak karşımıza çıkan enerji talebinin sağlanması için yenilenebilir enerji kaynaklarının kullanımı önem teşkil etmektedir. Buna bağlı olarak temiz ve sürdürülebilir enerji kaynakları üzerindeki bilimsel araştırmalar hız kazanmıştır. Mevcut enerji kaynaklarının varlığı tek başına yeterli değildir. Ayrıca bu enerji kaynaklarının potansiyeli, çevre ve iklimle olan uyumu, maliyeti ve devamlılığı gibi parametreler dikkate alınmalıdır. Bu parametreler ışığında enerji kaynaklarının “yenilenebilir” ve “sürdürülebilir” oluşu önem arz etmektedir. Gelişen teknoloji ile çevresel ve iklime duyarlı mimari tasarımların insan hayatına olumlu katkı sağladığı gözlemlenmektedir. Sürdürülebilir mimari; estetik, çevresel, sosyal, politik ve etik değerlerin bir kombinasyonudur. Bu yapıların bir diğer önemli özelliği de yenilenebilir enerji kaynaklarıyla beslenmesi ve özellikle bulunduğu yerde mevcut olan enerjiyi etkin biçimde kullanmasıdır. Bu çalışmada enerji performansının arttırılmasına yönelik binalarda uygulanan pasif bina tasarım sistemlerinin sürdürülebilir mimari ilkeleri ile bütüncül değerlendirilmesi bağlamında, Abu Dhabi’de bulunan Masdar Şehri ve kentin içinde yer alan Masdar Bilim ve Teknoloji Enstitüsü Kampüsü araştırma alanı olarak incelenmiştir.
